“ART FROM WITHIN” Exhibition

Visual artworks and written word by artists and writers who are currently or were formerly incarcerated. Curated by poet and artist Pamela Wright, who has taught creative writing in the Dutchess Country Jail for more than 10 years.

On view at WOMENSWORK.ART, located on South Clinton Street, Poughkeepsie, is Art from Within, a juried exhibition of visual art and written word material curated by poet and artist, Pamela Wright.  The exhibition features work from artists and writers who are currently or were formerly incarcerated.

The artworks showcased in Art from Within reflect the challenges faced by the artists during their incarceration, and post-incarceration as they reenter society. The exhibition emphasizes the creativity required to navigate under difficult circumstances, as well as the desire for these artists to heal and be heard. The visual artwork in Art from Within includes paintings, small objects, collage, drawings, photography and quilted media.  The literary work was largely created in the Men’s Writing Group at the Dutchess County Jail, facilitated by the curator, Pam Wright since 2007.
